You might have noticed that using essential oils has become a bit of a fashionable thing to do lately; you only have to spend a couple of minutes on Instagram and you’re sure to find someone talking about the benefits of oils and how they can help with all sorts of ailments and even help around the house with cleaning.
I wasn’t convinced when I first heard about them, I didn’t really get how it could make you feel better or help to treat a cold but a few months ago I was struggling more than usual with my anxiety and I decided to reach out to someone about how essential oils might help me.
In previous appointments with my doctor they had talked about the possibility of medication to help with my stress levels and this really wan’t a route I wanted to go down so if there was chance that something as natural as essential oils might help I was definitely willing to give it go.
I spoke for ages with an lovely lady on Instagram, she told me how oils could help me, how to apply them and even offered to send me some to try. We talked a lot about how I was feeling and during the process became ‘insta-friends’ and I think she’s just a brilliant human in so many ways.
I’ve been using the oils she sent me for a few months now and I’ve really felt a difference; I apply them to a diffuser bracelet which helps the calming scent to last longer and allows the oil to be absorbed into my skin gradually.
I suppose it’s quite difficult to measure how it works, especially when we’re using them in this context. If it were for a cold or something like that you would start to feel your symptoms ease and you would get better but anxiety is an on-going issue. It doesn’t just go away but I can feel myself being calmer.
I’m not so stressed out when things don’t go to plan; for example when my trains to work are cancelled or when the soft play centre is extremely busy. These are times when I know I have felt stressed and anxious but since using the oils I feel more in control of my emotions. As if I have been given the ability to separate what I can and cannot control and to let go of those things that are out of my control.
Using essential oils has had such a positive effect on me that I’m going to continue to use them and I’m going to invest some time into learning more about how they can help me in other areas of my life, health and home too. I was skeptical about using them at first but having felt the difference in my mental health since I started I am a believer that they can do so much good and they’re 100% natural too.
I’m not trying to sell you oils here, I’m not affiliated or working for any oil company. I simply want to share with you something that helped me tremendously over the last couple of months and I am 100% a believer that essential oils can help with mental health, they’re a natural way to combat the negative thoughts in my head and I’m excited to try others in the future that can help with all sorts of things like colds and bugs, sleeping, skin care, hair care, the list of benefits from oils is endless and I’m just getting started on my journey with them.
If you this is something you are interested in, please let me know and I can do further content on my experiences and if you know lots already about oils, please getting touch with any tips or advice you might have for getting the most out them.
One last thing to mention; it’s so so important that we keep talking about mental health, keep it in the public eye so that people don’t forget it is a real thing. Just because you can’t see it doesn’t mean someone isn’t suffering or struggling.
If you do feel like something isn’t right, maybe you can’t put your finger on it but you just know you’re not feeling yourself please speak to someone. Reaching out to my health visitor, my GP and my friends both IRL and on Instagram was by the far the best thing I could have done for myself and I’m in such a better place now because I spoke up.
